Recruiting a tax assistant for your practice.

For practices with a heavy self-assessment workload, and landlord and sole trader clients moving to Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.

What we test

Every tax assistant we put forward sits a practical test set for this work, reviewed by a qualified accountant. It covers:

  • Self-assessment computation
  • Rental income schedule
  • Allowable expenses

Typical work they’ll do for you

  • Self-assessment returns (SA100 and supplementary pages) prepared for review
  • Rental income schedules for landlord clients
  • Capital gains basics and supporting calculations
  • Tax computations prepared for your review
  • Making Tax Digital for Income Tax quarterly updates for sole traders and landlords
  • Preparation work in the run-up to the 31 January deadline

They prepare; your team reviews and signs off. They can’t act as your HMRC agent or sign off accounts or audits.

A landlord with two rental properties

Your tax assistant builds the rental income schedule from the letting statements, checks the allowable expenses and prepares the property pages and computation. Your tax manager reviews the return, agrees it with the client and files it.

Questions about tax assistants

Can they help with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?

Yes. They prepare quarterly updates for your review. Sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 have needed MTD for Income Tax since 6 April 2026. The threshold falls to £30,000 from 6 April 2027 and £20,000 from 6 April 2028. Source: GOV.UK

Can they file self-assessment returns?

No. They prepare the return and the computation behind it. Your team reviews the return and files it under your own HMRC agent access.

How do they help with the January deadline?

With Dedicated, they are part of your team all year, so the preparation work can start well before 31 January instead of piling up in the final weeks.
